AI Overviews & AI Mode
Google AI Overviews & AI Mode: What Actually Matters
Skip the folklore. We follow Google's published guidance and put the effort where it moves eligibility and citations.
Short answer
Google says pages need no special markup or AI text file to appear in AI features: they must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. We therefore focus on crawl and index health, helpful, original content, coverage of the follow-up questions AI Mode fans out to, and measurement in Search Console. Source: Google Search Central.
Context
What the data says about clicks
Treat these as directional. Methods differ and the paper is a working paper.

Approach
Fundamentals first, then coverage
What Google documents
- Page is indexed and can show a snippet
- Googlebot is not blocked in robots.txt or by a firewall
- Main content is available as text, not hidden behind scripts that fail to render
- Structured data matches visible content
- Helpful, people-first content with real expertise
What we add on top
- Query fan-out map for each priority topic
- Answer-first passages for each sub-question
- Entity and fact consistency across your site and profiles
- Search Console tracking of impressions and clicks, annotated by change
- Prompt-based checks of whether you are cited in the overview
Controls
Snippet controls and the trade-offs
| Control | Effect | When we use it |
|---|---|---|
| nosnippet | No text snippet, including in AI features | Pages where showing excerpts would undermine the business model |
| data-nosnippet | Excludes specific parts of a page | Paywalled or sensitive sections |
| max-snippet | Limits snippet length | Publishers balancing visibility and clicks |
| Google-Extended | Controls use for Gemini training, not Search ranking or AI Overviews | A licensing decision, separate from visibility |

FAQ
AI Overviews questions, answered
No. Google's documentation says there are no additional requirements beyond being indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and no special schema or AI text files are needed. Standard SEO fundamentals apply.
AI Overviews and AI Mode can issue several related searches for one question and combine what they find. Coverage of a topic's sub-questions therefore matters, not only the head term. We map those sub-questions for each priority topic.
Snippet controls such as nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet apply to Google's AI features. Using them also limits your appearance in regular results, so we help weigh the trade-off page by page.
Google counts clicks and impressions from AI features in Search Console's Web search type, but does not break them out separately. We compare query and page patterns over time, annotate changes and add prompt-based tracking for the answers themselves.
On queries where they appear, evidence suggests yes: one 2026 field experiment found about 38% fewer outbound organic clicks, and a large panel analysis found about 60% lower click-through. The goal shifts to being cited inside the overview and winning the clicks that remain.
